Storefront channel letter signs need a clear brief for both their daytime appearance and their lighting effect after dark. Before comparing quotations, decide which part of the sign should appear illuminated: the letter face, the wall behind the letters, or both.
For sign companies, shopfitters and retail project buyers, this distinction connects the visual design with the letter construction, mounting arrangement and information needed for manufacturing review.
RBS manufactures custom LED channel letters to project artwork and specifications. Use this guide to compare front-lit and halo-lit options and prepare a storefront sign enquiry.

What Are LED Channel Letters and Storefront Signs?
LED channel letters are individually formed letters or logo elements with LED illumination. A complete sign can contain lettering, a logo and separate graphic elements, with construction reviewed for each part.
“Storefront” describes where the sign is used. It does not identify a single lighting method. A storefront sign may use front-lit letters, halo-lit letters or a combination specified in the drawing.
In this guide, backlit, reverse-lit and halo-lit letters refer to letters designed to cast light behind the letter body onto the mounting background. Because suppliers may use these terms differently, include a reference image and identify the intended illuminated surfaces in your RFQ.
Front-Lit vs Halo-Lit Channel Letters
| Lighting option | Intended effect | Details to include in the enquiry |
|---|---|---|
| Front-lit channel letters | Light passes through the letter face. | Face material and colour, return material and depth, artwork, dimensions and day/night references. |
| Halo-lit or backlit channel letters | Rear illumination creates a glow on the background around the letter. | Opaque face and return finish, wall colour and texture, proposed standoff arrangement and cable route. |
| Front-and-halo-lit letters | Both the face and the background are illuminated. | Separate instructions for the front and rear effects, together with construction and installation details. |
These options describe lighting arrangements, rather than fixed grades of quality. Compare them against the same artwork, sign size, installation background and project requirements.
When to Specify Front-Lit Channel Letters
Front-lit channel letters are an option when the design calls for illuminated letter faces or a glowing logo face above the entrance.
RBS's front-lit product specification includes acrylic illuminated faces with stainless steel or aluminium returns. The artwork, dimensions, face colour and visible side finish should be identified separately so the quotation describes the complete letter body.
For a useful enquiry, include:
- Final wording and vector artwork for the letters and logo.
- Overall layout width and height, plus individual letter heights where specified.
- The intended face colour and a reference for the appearance after dark.
- Return material, visible finish and proposed letter depth, if already defined.
- Small strokes, detached elements or detailed symbols that need manufacturing review.
A daytime logo rendering does not establish the final illuminated appearance. Ask for the proposed face and lighting arrangement to be reviewed together. If a colour, depth or detail remains undecided, mark it as pending rather than inserting a standard value from an unrelated sign.
When to Specify Halo-Lit or Backlit Channel Letters
Halo-lit channel letters are an option when the intended effect is an opaque letter body outlined by light reflected from behind it. RBS also groups this style under backlit and halo-lit letters.
The letter finish remains part of the daytime design, while the mounting background forms part of the illuminated composition. Send a straight-on photograph of the proposed wall, a closer image of its surface and any relevant finish sample.
RBS's halo-lit specification includes metal faces and returns, acrylic backs and rear-facing LED illumination. Material, finish and standoff details are confirmed for the approved project.
Before quotation, identify:
- The wall or backer colour, texture and visible joints.
- The face and return material, including the required finish reference.
- The preferred light colour and the intended outline effect.
- Whether the mounting background is confirmed or still under design.
- Any proposed spacing behind the letters, cable exits and access constraints.
Avoid selecting a universal standoff distance from a photograph. Ask for the proposed arrangement to be shown in the construction drawing and review the intended effect against the actual background. Where appearance is critical, specify the sample or lighting-review stage required before a larger order.
Plan the Storefront Layout and Mounting Together
An isolated logo file gives the manufacturer limited information about its position above a shop entrance. Add an elevation or a marked-up site photograph showing the sign area, entrance, surrounding finishes and any obstacles.
Record the overall sign dimensions and identify the separate components included in one complete set. For several branches, provide a schedule that connects each location with its layout, wall information and quantity.
Show the proposed mounting approach, such as individual fixings, a support rail or a backer. State who will confirm the wall substrate, fixing design and installation measurements. Mounting choices should be coordinated with the installer and reflected in the approved drawing.
Also identify where cables can exit and where service access is available. A visual mock-up should be supported by construction information before it is treated as a manufacturing instruction.
Confirm Lighting and Electrical Requirements Before Ordering
State the intended light colour, operating environment and destination country. Provide any specified supply requirements, power-supply location, control requirements and documentation requested by the project team.
Ask the supplier and the project's electrical installer to confirm the proposed components and installation arrangement. A photograph of a lit sample does not establish the electrical specification for another location.
Where certification is requested, define whether the requirement concerns a component or the complete sign assembly. UL Solutions describes separate services for electric signs and sign components. Ask RBS to confirm the documentation available for the proposed project and configuration in the quotation.
What to Send for a Storefront Channel Letter Sign Quote
| RFQ item | Information to provide |
|---|---|
| Artwork | Vector logo, final wording, layout and drawing revision. |
| Dimensions | Overall width and height, letter heights, depths and units where specified. |
| Lighting | Front-lit, halo-lit or combined effect; light colour and reference images. |
| Materials and finishes | Face, return and back materials, visible finishes and colour references. |
| Installation | Wall photos, substrate information, mounting preference and cable-access details. |
| Electrical requirements | Destination, specified supply details and required project documentation. |
| Order quantities | Complete sets, different layouts, branch schedule and any spare elements. |
| Approval and packing | Drawing or sample-review stages, set labels, delivery country and postal code. |
Compare quotations using the same brief. Check which components, mounting items, power supplies, approval stages and packing arrangements are included, and identify items that remain subject to confirmation.
RBS confirms dimensions, construction, electrical components, MOQ and lead time for each project. If you need one prototype set, state that requirement in the enquiry and request confirmation in the quotation. Do not assume that a quantity or delivery arrangement from a previous project applies to a new design.
For the full quotation package, use the LED channel letters RFQ checklist. For rear-illuminated designs, review the separate halo-lit letter wall and mounting guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are backlit letters the same as halo-lit letters?
For the channel letters discussed here, both terms describe rear illumination that creates a glow on the background. Include a reference and mark the illuminated surfaces so the supplier can confirm the intended construction.
Which is better for a storefront: front-lit or halo-lit letters?
Start with the required lighting effect. Front-lit letters illuminate the face; halo-lit letters illuminate the background around an opaque letter body. Review the artwork, viewing conditions, wall and installation details before selecting the arrangement.
Can a sign have both an illuminated face and a halo?
Yes. Front-and-halo illumination can be specified as a combined arrangement. Show the two intended effects separately and ask for the proposed construction, lighting and mounting details to be confirmed during drawing review.
Can you quote from a shopfront photograph?
A photograph is useful for understanding the location. Add the artwork, confirmed dimensions, quantity, preferred lighting effect and installation information. Identify which measurements and construction details still need review.
